Projects that require panel relocation, utility-side work, trenching, or other major changes can cost more.

How long does a panel upgrade take?
SCE says the physical panel upgrade itself typically takes about 6–8 hours on average. The complete project timeline can be longer because permits, utility coordination, meter work, inspections, and scheduling may happen before or after the installation day.

Do I need a permit to upgrade my electrical panel?
In most Southern California jurisdictions, yes. Electrical service and panel upgrades require permits and inspection. Requirements vary by city and county. For example, Riverside County has a specific residential electrical upgrade permit process, the City of Riverside directs customers to obtain a panel-upgrade permit through Building & Safety, and Los Angeles allows qualifying residential electrical service-upgrade permits through its permitting system.

Eligible SCE customers may receive up to $4,200 through Charge Ready Home. Does every modern California home need a 200-amp panel?
Not necessarily. The California Energy Commission notes that single-family homes commonly have service panels ranging from roughly 60 to 200 amps, and many homes can add electric appliances without automatically upsizing the service. The correct size depends on the home's existing loads and planned additions. A load calculation is the best way to determine whether the existing service is adequate.

A 200-amp panel is especially common when planning for combinations of larger loads such as EV charging, electric cooking, HVAC, water heating, ADUs, or major remodels. It is also the minimum panel size required for SCE's Charge Ready Home rebate.

Do I need a panel upgrade to install a Level 2 EV charger?
